GIDEON RUBIN - FAMILY ALBUM

Sep 2009

Gideon Rubin is fascinated by the passage of time. For the exhibition “Family Album” he turned his attention to early 2oth century family photo albums over the period of the two world wars depicting anonymous figures. His images are rendered in muted tones, with bold brushstrokes, their features obscured or altogether lost.

In the process of repeating observed and imagined characters, only the most essential brushstrokes remain in the final composition, suggesting in simple yet expressive terms, a life passed, a secret unearthed or a memory resurfaced.

Gideon Rubin lives and works in London. his work has been shown extensively across Europe and the US, recent solo exhibitions includes ‘Red Ribbon’ at Hosfelt gallery in San Francisco, ‘Gideon Rubin’ at Rokeby in London, and ’A Boy’s Life’ at Hosfelt gallery New York.
